I’ve always hesitated to do a “style guide” because I think style is something completely personal and unique to each of my clients. I never want to make my clients style the style of my brand. Heck, I don’t necessarily want my brand to have a “style.” I want my brand to be about PEOPLE and not what they wear. However, I do believe what you wear says a lot about you, and in a portrait session, clothing can add or detract from the overall aesthetic. Here’s a few tips to keep in mind when choosing your family’s wardrobe for your fall portrait session, followed by four style boards. I tell families to start with what you have. You absolutely do not need to go out and purchase a new wardrobe for your entire family. Just add pieces where you need to, and you’ll have a style that’s truly authentic to your family.
— When in doubt, keep it simple. — You can’t go wrong with neutral colors and simple patterns. This will help keep the focus on the relationships in the image and not the clothing.
— Add texture. — Each of these style boards have at least one article of clothing that bring texture to the group. It can be rib knit, or ruffles, or corduroy, or buttons on a cardigan, but that little bit will give the entire image added dimension.
— Stick with wrinkle free fabrics. — As much as possible, try to wear fabrics that won’t crease and wrinkle too terribly. It’s a good idea to stay away from stiff, starched button-down’s for men and opt for a knit instead.
— Shoes matter. — The worst thing you can do is spend time putting together the perfect outfit and then wear running shoes.
— Get the right fit. — More than anything, if the clothes don’t fit well, whether they’re too tight or too loose, they won’t look good in your photos. Make sure your kids jeans are the right length and their shirts aren’t huge on them.
